Abstract
This qualitative study aims to explore the lives and social needs of powerless and marginalized older population living alone in Jeju area. Five older people living alone over 65 who dwell in Jeju area were sampled and assessed in order to analyze how to manage their lives, what types of policies to be provided by government, and how to be handled in social welfare system. In order to analyze the data, thematic analysis was imported and applied to meet the goals of this research study. The participants` life histories were also accessed horizontally to take care of the tendency of relationships and reciprocal networking. The results of this study proposed that the life of Jeju older population living alone could be interpreted as in need of coordinating social resources and services in terms of their difficulty, loneliness, family relationship, and hope. Firstly, especially, they tend to accept `living alone` as their destiny amongst the mixture of strongly family-generated tradition and independence to overcome current limits. Secondly, since social supports are would have been only solution to access their loneliness, the roles of life managers are more significant than any other service provisions in coordinating the lives of older population living alone. Thirdly, they are likely to have absolute belief towards strong ties of family in spite of the currently tortured family relationships. Lastly, sound and sustainable health conditions, financial supports, and medical services are fundamental components of the hopes they only have. Based on the results generated from this study, practical and political implications are presented to enhance the living quality of older population living alone.
